The Sneaky Truth About Microplastics in Skincare

I had a conversation with my homeopathic practitioner, Eileen, recently about the presence of microplastics in our environment.

Microplastics are hidden dangers in the beauty products we use every day. Many people using skincare products are unaware of their harmful effects. Let's explore where microplastics come from, how they impact our environment and skin, and how to select beauty items free from these tiny pollutants.

Understanding the Sources of Microplastics in Skincare

Microplastics are small plastic particles, often less than 5 millimeters in size. In skincare, they commonly originate from scrub exfoliators, cleansers, and even moisturizers. Many products use polyethylene or polypropylene beads to enhance texture.

However, these microbeads can have significant environmental repercussions. When products containing these plastics are rinsed off, they flow down drains, ultimately polluting rivers and oceans.

Effects of Microplastics on the Environment and Skin

Environmental Impact

Microplastics are harmful to ecosystems. Aquatic animals often mistake these particles for food. Studies show that seabirds have ingested plastic in some form. Ingesting microplastics can lead to health problems for marine life, causing internal injuries and reproductive issues. The accumulation of these toxins in marine animals poses direct threats to human health, as we consume seafood.

The long-term consequences are still under investigation, but the data indicates that microplastics are a growing concern for biodiversity and food safety.

Effects on Skin

Though microplastics might seem harmless in skincare, they can produce various skin issues. Exfoliating products that contain these plastics can irritate the skin, leading to inflammation and allergic reactions. Research shows that chemical microplastics can strip the skin of its natural oils, undermining the barrier that protects against environmental toxins.

Sometimes, they are used as an emulsifier or thickening agent to improve the consistency of the product or stabilize the solution of a face cream.

Furthermore, products loaded with microplastics can disrupt the skin’s microbiome, which plays a crucial role in maintaining a clear and healthy complexion. For instance, studies have reported links between compromised skin barrier function and the development of dermatological conditions like eczema and acne.

Seek out Natural Exfoliant Alternatives

For a satisfying exfoliation experience without microbeads, consider using natural alternatives. Products containing oats, clays or jojoba beads offer gentle exfoliation. These ingredients not only improve skin texture but are more eco-conscious. Weekly natural exfoliation actually works to improve skin's texture!

Luminous Rose provides alternative exfoliation methods

Products with shorter, plant-based ingredient lists are less likely to harbor hidden plastics. I've created several formulas to help exfoliate skin and scalp.

Benefits of Using a natural Scalp Scrub:

  • Removes buildup: A scalp scrub helps to exfoliate scalp, removing dead skin cells, product buildup, and excess oil.

  • Promotes hair growth: By unclogging hair follicles and stimulating blood circulation, a scalp scrub can promote healthier hair growth.

  • Improves scalp health: Regular use of a scalp scrub can help maintain a healthy scalp environment, reducing dandruff and itchiness.

  • Enhances product absorption: By clearing scalp of impurities, a scalp scrub can help hair care products penetrate better, making them more effective.

  • Adds volume and shine: A clean and exfoliated scalp can lead to hair that looks more voluminous and shiny.

Benefits of Using an Exfoliating Cleansing Gel:

My Rose + Hibiscus Cleansing Gel offers a natural, gentle yet effective way to remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and reveal a smoother complexion.
