7 Ingredients that are Banned in Other Countries

For some time now, I have been expressing that skincare in the US resembles the untamed wild west —where anything goes. Compared to other countries, regulations in the US are considerably more relaxed. Anyone can state that a product is natural or organic without it actually being so.

The relaxed regulations have created a market where there are no restrictions. Consumers are often left to navigate through a sea of options, trying to discern what is truly beneficial for their skin amidst the abundance of choices.

When it comes to the safety of skincare products and cosmetics, it's essential to be aware of the ingredients that are banned in certain countries due to their potential harmful effects.

These banned substances include:

  1. Formaldehyde: Known for its preservative properties, formaldehyde is a potential carcinogen and has been banned in several countries due to its link to cancer.

  2. Petroleum: Often found in skincare products, petroleum derivatives can clog pores and cause skin irritation, leading to their ban in various regions.

  3. Propyl Paraben: A common preservative in cosmetics, parabens like propyl paraben have been restricted in some countries due to concerns over their endocrine-disrupting properties.

  4. Fragrance: While adding a pleasant scent to products, synthetic fragrances can trigger allergies and respiratory issues, prompting their prohibition in certain nations. Fragrance or Parfum can literally encompass hundreds of ingredients under one word,

  5. Phthalates: These chemicals, commonly used to enhance the flexibility of plastics, have been banned in some countries due to their potential adverse effects on hormone regulation.

  6. Avobenzone: Found in chemical sunscreens, avobenzone has been restricted in certain regions due to its potential to generate harmful free radicals when exposed to sunlight.

  7. Oxybenzone: Another ingredient in chemical sunscreens, oxybenzone has raised concerns over its impact on coral reefs, leading to its prohibition in various coastal areas. >>> Seeking a healthier sunscreen option?

Being mindful of these banned ingredients can help you make informed choices when selecting skincare and cosmetic products, prioritizing their health and well-being. It is crucial for you to stay informed, discerning, and proactive in your skincare choices.

Luminous Rose products are consciously formulated— not by a 3rd party but in-house by the founder (me). I only use essential oils to offer scent in my skincare, never fragrance. My training has allowed me to thoughtfully follow the standards of the European Union. I know exactly what goes into my products because I am the researcher, formulator and hand-pourer!
